Tooth extractions can be something that makes you nervous. However, at Marr Family Dentistry, a dentist in Greeley, CO, we make sure to make the process as smooth as possible. If you think you may need a tooth extraction, Drs. Kami and Kevin Marr let you know exactly what you can expect from the process.
Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction is most typically done as a last resort for a tooth that’s extremely infected or decayed. We’ll make every effort we can to try and save your tooth before extraction is needed, both with dental fillings and root canals. However, sometimes it can’t be avoided when it’s caused too much damage.
For younger patients, tooth extraction may also be done to free up room in the mouth. If they have extremely crowded teeth and more are expected to come in, teeth may need to be removed to make room. Teeth may also be extracted to fix an issue with the bite.
The Process of Tooth Extraction
Tooth extractions at our office are usually done in about an hour. We can handle most extractions, but wisdom teeth removal and extremely complicated extractions will need to be handled by a local professional. In that case, we’ll make sure we recommend you to someone we trust.
If we determine that the extraction can be done in-office, we’ll start by numbing it with a local anesthetic. The entire area around the tooth will be numbed to ensure your comfort. Your tooth will then be wiggled back and forth, carefully and gently detaching the tooth from the root system. When we determine that the tooth is detached, it’ll then be taken out of the socket.
We’ll clean the socket thoroughly and put in a suture to sew the hole shut. We’ll give you cleaning and care instructions to make sure that you have a full, healthy recovery at home. If you notice regular or extreme bleeding after a few days, please contact us. Your suture may have come out or ruptured.
If you’re receiving a restoration after the tooth being pulled, we’ll discuss that with you. For dental implants, we’ll refer you to a local expert to perform the actual implantation surgery. For younger patients that may be receiving orthodontics work after, we can refer you to a local orthodontist as well.
Sedation Dentistry Options
We know that some people struggle with a severe fear of the dentist or dental anxiety. It can prevent some people from going to the dentist at all, which may lead to an infected tooth that needs to be removed.
At Marr Family Dentistry, we offer sedation dentistry to ensure that you’re relaxed and calm throughout the entire procedure. We have both nitrous oxide that you can breathe throughout the procedure and oral conscious sedation, in the form of a pill before treatment. Nitrous wears off immediately, so the patient can drive themselves. However, for oral sedation, the patient will need a ride
For both forms, you won’t be completely put asleep. You’ll be awake and alert, usually capable of answering questions if you need to. However, you’ll be in a completely relaxed state to dull any panic you may feel. Some patients even fall asleep during the procedure.
